Sheba
Your New Best Friend
Meet Sheba!
Adoption Fee: $400
Sheba is an approximately 5-year-old mixed-breed dog from Barbados, where dogs like her are affectionately called “cane dogs.” Weighing about 25 pounds, she has a lovely brown coat, a black snout, and a little white on her belly. She may fill out a bit more now that she’s receiving regular, nourishing meals.
This sweet girl is discovering how comfortable life can be. Sheba grew up with an owner who loved her but lacked the resources to provide enough food, veterinary care, or a securely fenced yard. Living close to a busy road meant she was kept tied outdoors around the clock.
Sheba also raised at least one litter of puppies who were rescued in critical condition. Two of her puppies later traveled to the United States and found homes through Hudson Paws. Now spayed and receiving care herself, it’s Sheba’s turn to find a loving home.
Sheba can be shy and nervous around unfamiliar people, but once she feels comfortable, she’s affectionate and eager for belly rubs. During her month with her current caregiver, she has adapted quickly to spending time indoors, walking on a leash, and following daily routines.
Sheba is house-trained, enjoys playing with dogs both big and small, and is making good progress with leash walking. She previously lived outdoors alongside cats, though that doesn’t tell us how she would adjust to sharing an indoor home with them. Her caregiver has seen no destructive behavior or signs of separation anxiety during their time together.
Sheba hasn’t had formal training yet, so her future family can help her learn basic commands and household expectations. She sometimes jumps up on people she feels comfortable with and joins in when the other dogs bark. Patient, consistent guidance will help her practice calmer greetings as she settles into her new life. She may also need time to relax before feeling comfortable enough to eat in unfamiliar surroundings.
Sheba is looking for someone who will give her a gentle welcome, a reassuring routine, and plenty of affection. She has already embraced so many changes, and watching her enjoy the simple comforts of being cared for has been a joy.
Could you give Sheba a soft place to land, a belly rub, and a family to call her own?
